The population of stray dogs on the islands of the Bahamas is large and troublesome. The homeless animals that roam the streets have been nicknamed "potcakes" because they are often fed the remains that stick to the bottom of the pot used to cook the traditional island dish, peas and rice. Organizations like BAARK are at the forefront of efforts to increase spay and neuter programs and promote responsible pet ownership. In addition, a number of groups in the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the United States assist in facilitating international adoption of potcakes. Today, the Royal Bahamian Potcake is a recognized breed in the Bahamas.
